Japanese Porcelain Shi-Shi Lion Dog on Later Carved Scroll Stand

A Japanese Porcelain Shi-Shi Lion Dog statue, dating to the Meiji period between 1868-1912. The piece is presented on a later carved, wooden scroll stand.

Shi-Shi Lion Dogs, also referred to as Foo Dogs, were often used in pairs at the gateway of Japanese homes or fixed to their rooftops. Believed to protect the home, the left Foo Dog would often have a closed mouth to keep good spirits in and the right would have an open mouth to keep evil spirits out.
