18K Yellow Gold Art Nouveau Necklace with Seed Pearls and Glass Doublet

An 18 karat yellow gold necklace, with a 48cm long chain held with a 14 karat yellow gold bolt ring claps, attached to a handmade centrepiece. The pendant has a central yellow gold rubover setting that contains one 5.51mm brilliant cut blue glass doublet. It is surrounded by fourteen 1.25mm-2mm natural cultured seed pearls and twelve 3mm natural cultured button pearls, and one 5.5mm x 3mm fresh water pearl.

Glass doublets, also known as garnet doublets, were first used around 1850, when it was discovered that molten glass could fuse with natural garnets. By adhering coloured glass to a colourless garnet, jewellers could create a genuine looking gemstone with any colour they wanted; opening a whole new world of manmade gemstone manufacturing to 19th century jewellers. This technique was used up until the early 20th century, where lab grown and other synthetic gemstone alternatives became popular.
